    Go Rock Climbing in Norwalk

    March 31, 2015

Adventuresome Waypointers are always looking for the next best way to get out and get active, so how about going vertical in a local rock climbing gym?

Sometimes, when people think rock climbing, they visualize rugged, tan-armed globetrotters dangling from cliff edges. Yes, rock climbing can be an extreme sport, but beginners of almost any fitness level can climb too. Head to a local rock climbing gym to get a great workout, learn how to climb in a controlled environment or practice your already established skills, and experience the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel upon reaching the top of your route.

    Most Convenient for Waypointers

Our local climbing gym is located at Sono Field House here in Norwalk. Any active person’s dream come true, this 52,000 square foot indoor sports facility also houses turf sporting fields, a ropes course, and conference space for corporate or personal events. The climbing wall features overhangs, cracks and routes for all levels to offer just the right challenge. You can also take lessons, become certified in belaying, plan your next party at the facility, and more.

    Most Active Climbing Community

Fairfield, Connecticut, just 10 miles up the coast, is home to the Fairfield Rock Climbing Meetup and Carabiner’s Climbing & Fitness Center. The climbing group is made up of 18+ local climbing enthusiasts and is perfect for both newbies and seasoned pros. Since climbing is a partner sport, after all, joining a group like this one is a great way to meet fellow climbers in a friendly environment. The group regularly climbs at Carabiner’s, which doubles as a fitness facility featuring classes in yoga, gymnastics, cheerleading, ice skating, and indoor field sports. You can also plan events and parties at Carabiner’s, sign up for personalized instruction, or get certified.

    Best Family Day Trip

While not a traditional rock climbing gym, The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT offers plenty of adventure. This “aerial forest park” is located on 5 acres of picturesque woodland. Adventurers 5 to adult will explore, climb, swing, and traverse the park’s “treetop trails” via bridges and ziplines. A great idea for a day of family fun, keep the Adventure Park in mind if you’re itching to get airborne in a whole new way.

    Be Prepared

Make sure to wear appropriate clothing when heading to a local climbing facility. For rock climbing, comfortable exercise clothing that promotes mobility is recommended. Check the Adventure Park’s FAQ for recommended attire if you plan to visit the aerial forest park. You can rent gear for climbing, but if you decide you would like to purchase your own, head to our local REI. REI also offers a great overview of everything you’ll need to know before you start climbing.
