    Enjoy! Milford Oyster Festival

    August 4, 2015

A crowd of people in a park with red cups

They’ve been called “Nature’s Most Helpful Mollusk”--which snails probably resent. On top of the fact that an oyster contains 16 grams of protein and a host of nutrients like zinc and calcium, it’s also delicious. And few Americans appreciate oysters quite as much as Connecticut dwellers!

On August 15, take a scenic 45 minute drive from Norwalk to Milford, and enjoy a day of entertainment and delicious oysters all day at the Milford Oyster Festival. Oh, and did we mention the free admission? Here’s how you can get the most out of your day (or two).

    Arrive Early

The night before the Oyster Festival, there’s a pre-festival tradition called Oyster Eve. It starts at 6:00pm and goes until 10:00pm on Friday, August 14. Head to the Downtown Shops and Lisman Landing to kick the weekend off, then stay the night at a local hotel.

If you’d prefer to leave on Saturday, head out early--there’s sure to be some traffic on the way there. Enjoy the cool morning breeze as you take the scenic seaside route through Fairfield, Bridgeport, and into Milford. If you’d rather take public transportation, you can; it just takes a little bit longer to reach your destination.

Note: the Milford Oyster Festival officially starts at 10am and goes until 6pm!

    Be there or be square.

    Be Prepared

How often do we find ourselves without sunscreen, water, or cash for an all-day event? Make sure you take the aforementioned items, and before you head out, check the weather. Chance of rain? Bring ponchos or an umbrella (this festival’s happening rain or shine). If you’re carrying a purse or wallet, make sure it’s not heavy and doesn’t have to be held at all times (you’ll lose it). Ensure you’re wearing proper shoes, and if it’s sunny, wear a hat. Hair gets flat anyway, sunscreen wears off, and the last thing you want is a bad face burn before work Monday.

If you’re planning on carpooling with friends, make sure you ask right away! After all, friends don’t let friends miss one of the best seafood festivals in Connecticut.

    Plan Ahead

If you’re planning on joining the Oyster Shucking Contest, you’ll need to be there by 12:15, when the first heat begins. If you’re excited to see Gin Blossoms, FastBall or The Rembrandts, better plan on being in the right place at the right time! Check the main stage schedule for details on musical acts.

The main stage and oysters aren’t the only things happening--there’s a car show, harbor stage, and harbor activities. Dive into your favorites --check out individual schedules under “Entertainment Schedules” on the main page.

Bottom line? You’ll get more out of your day if you plan ahead. If you’d rather just wander and see what happens, that’s OK, too. Stress-free is best.
