Apple Day might only be official in the UK--but here in Fairfield County, we’re celebrating. And we’re doing it the best way--by picking and eating lots of delicious apples.
Take a break from your love affair, and make room on the table for this powerhouse fruit packed with 10 vitamins. Side note: eaten once daily, apples are supposed to keep the doctor away. (We’re not really sure if that’s true, but we’re definitely going to test enough crisp, sweet apples to find out.)

Best for a Weekend Visit
Beardsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard
Directions (35 min.)
Beardsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard opens in September (check site for hours), but you can only pick your own apples on the weekend. If you’ve got your eye on a certain variety of apples, call ahead (203-926-1098) to see when they’re available. Plan for a day trip, and leave early so you can have your pick of the crop. Fortunately, all 10,000 apple trees here are dwarf and semi-dwarf, so your arms won’t be sore after hauling in your treasures.
Best for Yummy Fall Goodies
Blue Jay Orchards
Directions (40 min.)
Head to Blue Jay any day of the week after September 4, 2015 (Monday - Friday: 11am - 4:30pm, Weekends: 9am-5pm). Not only are the apples awesome here, so are the goods at the farm stand (open 7 days a week from 9am-5pm). Choose among freshly baked pies, famous cider donuts, cookies, turnovers, dumplings, loaf cakes, and pastries. You’ll definitely want to stock up.
Best for Kids

Silverman’s Farm is seven days a week as of August 29, 2015 (9am - 4:30pm). This spot’s fun for the whole family, with an animal farm, special seasonal events, live music, and weekend tractor rides when the apples are all picked (late October). We’ve heard that on a clear day, you can see Long Island--but you’ll have to find out for yourself!
Once you’re all apple-d out, there’s nothing better than baking an old fashioned apple pie in your brand new, state-of-the art kitchen. Add this to the list of reasons you’ll love fall in Connecticut--especially if you happen to live in the best luxury apartments in Norwalk.
